The Gear Ratio

Most machines want torque, not speed. Selecting the gearhead ratio as part of the motor design rather than bolting one on afterwards lets you optimise the whole drive. Our geared motor series offers 9:1, 18:1, 20:1, 30:1, 36:1 and 61:1 on the A80 and A92 frames, 15:1 to 75:1 on the larger A92 variant, and 60:1 or 80:1 on the A114 at 1000–3000 W. Shaft and Mounting

Enclosure and Ingress Protection

What Customisation Cannot Fix

Being straight about the limits saves everyone time.

  • Physics still applies. A given frame size can only dissipate so much heat. If your duty cycle demands more continuous power than the frame can shed, the answer is a larger frame, not a cleverer winding.
  • New tooling has a cost and a lead time. Changing a laminated stack or a housing casting is a tooling change. We have our own tool room, which shortens it considerably, but it is not free.
  • Very small volumes may not justify a full custom design. Often the better answer is a standard frame with custom shaft, winding and mounting, which captures most of the benefit at a fraction of the tooling cost.
  • Brush wear does not disappear. If annual running hours are high, no amount of customising a brushed motor beats moving to a brushless DC motor.
